I’ve been an Engineer at Toptal for just about one year now, working on the same project since I joined the network: Ondello, a service that connects doctors and patients over WebRTC.

When I first joined Ondello, I was hired as a Senior Ruby on Rails Developer, tasked to build a service up from scratch. These days, we’re a team of multiple developers working on a fairly large, complex system.

With this post, I’d like to share the story behind Ondello. Specifically, I’d like to talk about: how a simple application became not-so-simple, and how our use of cutting-edge technologies posed problems I’d never considered before.

Nintendo continues to ride strong Switch and software sales according to its first-quarter earnings report. The Switch once again led the charge, with lifetime sales sitting at 19.67 million units.

On the Switch software front, Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze sold 1.4 million since May, Mario Aces has crossed the million mark in the two weeks since its release, and two Labo sets have sold 1.39 million units combined. To date, 86 million games have shipped for the platform.

Overall, Nintendo recorded $274 million operating profit, up 88 percent year-on-year, as revenue grew 9 percent to $1.38 billion. You can read the full report here.

The Switch’s continued success is encouraging considering the much weaker first-party software library it has thus far in 2018 compared to last year, where titans like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey drove fans to the platform. This bodes well for its future.

Karthik Nemmani didn’t win his regional spelling bee. He didn’t even win his county spelling bee. But he was still good enough to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Karthik had to spell two words correctly to seal the title, which he did with ease, and the lanky, soft-spoken Texan stepped back and smiled as he was showered with confetti His winning word was “koinonia,” which means Christian fellowship or communion.

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) — Karthik Nemmani didn’t win his regional spelling bee. He didn’t even win his county spelling bee. But he was still good enough to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Throwing everything he had into his one shot at glory, 14-year-old Karthik outlasted better-known spellers and became the champion after a dramatically abrupt end to the competition, when 12-year-old Naysa Modi misspelled the word “Bewusstseinslage” in the first championship round.
